98. Naive Rondel, Anglo-Irish, ca. 19th Century

A village scene. Oil on milk glass, framed under the original rolled glass in a circular moss green velvet frame. The simple image depicts a village church with people walking nearby. The flat painting style could be described as "naive" having probably been painted by a self-taught painter from direct observation, with very good attention to small details. The round, white glass on which the painting is done is convex to give the illusion of depth. No signature was found. The frame is moss green velvet that has faded somewhat to a brownish tone. The painting measures approx. 13-1/4" in diameter, and with the frame, approx. 19" diameter.
