| 99. Alexander Warshawsky (American, 1887-1945)
"St. Tropez - Old Port". Oil on canvas, signed in the lower right corner, framed in the original frame, the canvas size 18" x 22", and with the frame overall 25-1/4" x 29-1/4". Prov: descended in the family to the current owner. Warshawsky was born in Cleveland, Ohio on March 29, 1887. He studied at the National Academy of Design. Most of his early career was spent in Paris, France; however, by 1934 he was a resident of Los Angeles where he lived and worked until his death in 1945. He was the brother of artist Abel G. Warshawsky. His work includes landscapes, portraits, interiors, and still life. "Both brothers are incorrigible exhibitors in the salons; but the French, who are always messing up foreign names in print, used to put them both down in the salon catalogue as A. Warshawsky, so that nobody could tell which was which or even that there were two of them. So Aleck said wagishly that he would adopt Prohibition and drop the Ale out of his name; and ever since he has been Xander, or as the salon catalogue has it, "X". - "Paris on Parade" R.F. Wilson, p. 228. 800/1,200 Sold $2,415.00 back to catalog |
