240. William Henry Holmes (American, 1846-1933)

Born near Cadiz, Ohio on December 1, 1846, William Henry Holmes was a teacher early in life. He studied art briefly with Theodore Kauffmann and at the Munich Academy. While a field artist with the Hayden Survey of Yellowstone in 1872, he sketched in the Rocky Mountains. He was a geologist for the U.S. Geological Survey of the Grand Canyon in 1880, and participated in a study of the Pueblo Indians in 1886. From 1898-1906 he taught geology at the University of Chicago; he then was with the Smithsonian Institution as Director of the National Collection of Fine Arts. While in southern California in 1899, he painted on Santa Catalina Island. He died in Royal Oak, Michigan on April 20, 1933. -www.askart.com
