Antique hand-colored lithograph in beautiful colors. Lower left "J. Gould & H.C. Richter del. et lith.", lower right "Walter, Imp.", with Latin name for this bird, more commonly known as "Turnstone". Paper appox. 14-3/4" x 21-1/2". Not framed.

John Gould has become known as one of the foremost orthinological artists. Gould created almost 3000 images that were made into hand-color lightographic plates of birds and other animals. The lithography and hand coloring was done by other artists, among them his wife, Elizabeth Gould, Edward Lear, William Hart, and H.C. Richter, whose names appear with Gould's on each image.
