73. Darius Cobb (American, 1834-1919)

Portrait of President William McKinley (President of the United States,1897-1901). Oil on canvas mounted onto a wood panel, approx. 30" x 25", signed in the lower left corner, framed in a gilt frame overall approx. 35" x 25-1/2".

Born in Malden, Massachusetts, Darius Cobb was a celebrated figure in Boston during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was a painter of society portraits, landscape, historical costumes as well as a lithographer, and art critic. He was the twin brother of Cyrus Cobb and often collaborated with his brother on large historical and religious paintings. Both Cobb brothers spent the greater part of their careers in Boston. -askart.com
