| 251. Eugene Higgins (American, 1874 - 1958)
"Out Of Shadows". Etching on paper, the plate size approx. 3-3/4" x 3-1/4", signed in pencil in the lower right margin, matted and framed under glass overall approx. 11" x 10". Eugene Higgins was a self-taught artist. He spent most of his youth in St. Louis in a poor neighborhood, drawing figures and scenes in his environment. One of the strongest graphic influences in his printwork was that of Millet. In 1908 Eugene Higgins went to Paris to study at the Academie Julian and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Paris was where he first learned etching and engraving. He later had a one man exhibition of his graphic works at the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, in 1912. He was a member of the National Academy of Design, the League of American Artists, the National Arts Club, the American Water Color Society and the Brooklyn Society of Etchers. During his career his paintings and etchings were exhibited at such major institutions as the National Academy of Design, the Carnegie Institute, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Art Institute of Chicago. Collections of his etchings and monotypes are found in the British Museum, London, the Congressional Library, Washington, DC, the New York Public Library and the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. Higgins's work most often deals with the lives of the less fortunate. This print is a dramatic example. 100/150 Sold $143.75 back to catalog |
