900. Two Beswick Glazed Ceramic Pieces

Two Beswick glazed ceramic pieces, marked, ca. 1936. The first is a tubular-shaped vase with a slightly flared foot, and with two asymmetrically mounted handles, approx. 7-1/2"H x 3-1/2" in diameter. The second is a pitcher with a bulbous base with a tapering foot and a flaring asymmetrical spout and a geometric handle, approx. 9"H. Both are hand decorated with taupe stylized trees, green bushes and blue, yellow and orange hollyhocks, in a style reminiscent of Clarice Cilff. Both are marked on the underside. These pieces may be the designs of Mr. Symcox, who worked for Beswick from 1933-39.

Responding to the modernist influence in design so evident on the continent, many of these highly distinctive shapes were designed by Mr. Symcox and decorated in 'satin matt' glazes.
