893. A Royal Copenhagen "Flora Danica" Cachepot

A Royal Copenhagen "Flora Danica" porcelain cachepot, approx. 6" in diameter + handles, 4-3/4"H, exquisitely decorated with floral images and gilt designs, with applied handles and flowers at either side, marked on the underside. Retail for this piece is $5,200.00.

In 1790, The Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory began production of Flora Danica. The King of Denmark commissioned the service for the Empress Catherine II of Russia, but she died before the work had been completed and the service remained the property of the Danish Royal Family. The name and decorations come from the botanical works on paper, "Flora Danica", published in the period 1761-1883. Since 1885, the service has been in regular production. All the details are modeled and cut out by hand, just as the motifs are painted freehand from the original copperplates in the encyclopedia.
