350. A Pair of Framed Micro Mosaic Plaques, ca. Early 20th Century, by Vatican Studio del Mosaico

A pair of framed micro mosaic plaques, one of a man and one of a woman, each approx. 16-1/2" x 11-1/4" overall with the gilt frames. Both with stickers on verso from Vatican Studio del Mosaico.

The decorative art of mosaics has been practiced since ancient times, and has had a vivid history of different materials used in different cultures. The Vatican's Studio Mosaico was established in the 17th century. It lead the world for centuries in mastering the art for clerical use as well as popularizing images reproduced from paintings for wide distribution. Plaques such as these excuisitely fashioned pieces were done by the masters of the workshop around the turn of the 19th-20th century. They were a costly item even then and were brought back world over from visitors to Rome.
