| 1091. A Gilt Bronze Figurine of a Seated Luohan
A gilt bronze figurine of Luohan serenely seated in lotus posture on a tapered rectangular base, measuring 6"T x 4-1/4"W x 3"D. Buddhist tradition tells of groups of 16, 18, or 500 luohans who were commanded by Buddha to await the coming of Maitreya, the Future Buddha. Cult built around the luohans as guardians gained momentum at the time Chinese Buddhists were persecuted. Luohans are deemed to have passed through all of the stages of the Path to Enlightenment. Such individuals do not attain Buddhahood, but are regarded as holy figures or saints. 800/1,200 Sold $373.75 back to catalog |
