As was the fashion at the time, the piece is elaborately decorated with relief designs and applied ornaments. The designs on the body include cartouches with clustered figures of Venus and putti, grotesque masks below, swags of flowers and architectural elements, with twin figures as handles at either side. The lid is surmounted by the figure of Venus looking in a mirror held by Cupid, standing against part of a tree encircled by dolphins, atop a fluted pedestal with swags of leaves around. There is a sea horse engraved below the pedestal. The spigot, handle and the pedestal base have cast elements including dolphins, putti, masks, and various foliate shapes.
